Addressing the Global Climate Crisis in Our School – Global System for Environmental Education and Management.

We are certified in an Environmental Management System following the European Standard ISO14001: 2018 since 2004. This norm allows us establishes a series of environmental measures that allow the students and families of the School to develop commitments for action in their daily activities.

The spirit of the Global System for Environmental Education and Management involves complying with current legislation and regulations on environmental aspects, as well as other requirements that our School considers appropriate, acquiring a commitment to continuous improvement in all relationships related to the care of the environment and natural resources, raise awareness, sensitize and involve the entire Educational Community, promoting appropriate environmental behaviour and knowledge of the natural spaces in our surroundings, establish relationships with institutions outside the School and improve the environmental quality of the School by promoting the rational use of resources, precisely managing waste and thus contributing to the reduction of pollution.

Curriculum integration

An Environmental Working Group, composed by the Environmental Coordinator of the School and several representatives from all educational levels, establishes an Environmental Education Program will be carried out with the students at the different levels. All planning is sent to the School Board for approval. Once approved, it will be included in the Annual General Programming.

Expected results

Develop the Environmental Policy of the School and have a better organization of the different environmental activities carried out in the School during the course.

Work process

The work process begins with the establishment of the Environmental Policy and the appointment of the Environmental Coordinator, responsible for the Environmental Management and Education of the School.

There is an Environmental Committee, permanently formed by the Pedagogical Directors, the administrator and the Environmental Coordinator. The functions of this Committee are to lead the process and coordinate the different groups of teachers. They also make decisions about the prioritization of environmental aspects and the organization of environmental programs.

At the same time, an Environmental Working Group is established to impulse Environmental Education, establishing an Environmental Education Program and executing the guidelines defined by the Committee. This group is made up of the Environmental Coordinator and several representatives from all educational levels. The group organizes the environmental activities to be carried out with the students at the different levels. All planning is sent to the School Board for approval. Once approved, it will be included in the Annual General Programming.

The activities of experience and direct contact with the environment, as well as the actions for the conservation and improvement of the environment, have addressed basic environmental aspects such as:

  • Seasonal and climatic cycles.
  • The air. Prevention and adaptation to climate change. Air quality.
  • The school and the home as an immediate environment. Take care of the immediate environment. Sustainable consumption, fair trade. The prevention, reuse and recycling of waste.
  • The energy flows. The sun and its use as a renewable energy source. Energy efficiency and renewable energy.
  • The soil and its fertility. Organic farming, local and seasonal products. School gardens.
  • Water. Water-saving and management.
  • The acoustic environment. Sounds and noises. Quiet areas. School mobility and its contribution to quality of life.
  • Geological resources and raw materials. Biodiversity, geodiversity and the landscape. Natural spaces and protected species. The custody of the territory. Physical exercise in natural settings

Activities

A sample of the different activities and projects that will be carried out in the School is:

Name of activity Procedure
CONSUMPTION AND SUSTAINABILITY WORKSHOPS We believe that is necessary an awareness of the relationship between our way of life and the economic system in which we live. As consumers in a developed country, we have the responsibility to change our behaviour for a better future. Our way of consuming directly affects social and environmental aspects.

For this reason, every year request Consumer Workshops for Secondary Students from the Valladolid City Council through their Department of Environment and Sustainability.

CARBON FOOTPRINT REGISTER We calculate our Carbon Footprint from2014 to 2019proposing actions to reduce it.

The calculation is validated and registered in the Carbon Footprint Registry by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Environment in Spain. We have been the first Educational School in Spain to enrol in the Carbon Footprint Registry, compensation and carbon dioxide absorption projects.

WASTE MANAGEMENT The objective is announcing to the Educational Community, the waste management policy of the School, as well as the equipment and resources dedicated to its collection and treatment.

We try to raise awareness that waste production should be reduced with appropriate habits of use and consumption and promote good management of the purchase to decrease its environmental impact.

The main waste management programs that we currently have in place in the School are the following:

  • ECOEMBES Container Recycling Program.
  • Plastic Packaging Recycling Program through financial compensation with an external company.
  • TERRACYCLE Ballpoint Pen Recycling Program.
  • Paper Recycling Program.
  • Cap Collection Program for charitable purposes.
  • Cartridge Recycling Program with an external company registered with the Junta de Castilla y León.
  • Paper Recycling and Reuse Program in classrooms.
  • Battery collection program with the Valladolid City Council.
  • Project ANOTHER END IS POSSIBLE; about Electric and Electronic Devices Recycle Program.

PROJECT about PLASTIC MATERIALS PROBLEM The project goals are the organizing, classifying and identifying different types of materials and learn how correctly segregate them.

For this, in the Technology Subject of 1st and 3rd Compulsory Secondary Education, students learn to distinguish the four main groups into which the materials are divided (wood and its derivatives, metals, plastics and stone ceramic materials).

After, the students record videos about the problem of plastic and its impact on nature.

RENEWABLE ENERGY WORKSHOPS Science and Technology teachers propose different activities to the students based on the material of an educational project of the Junta de Castilla y León to sensitize students on the socio-environmental problems of polluting energy sources and bring them closer to renewable energy through simple experiences that they themselves can develop at home.
PARTICIPATION IN THE SUSTAINABLE SCIENCE FAIR OF THE SCIENTIFIC PARK OF THE UNIVERSITY OF VALLADOLID, SPAIN. We participate in the 2017 edition, “MY SUSTAINABLE HOUSE”, and in the 2018 edition, «SUSTAINABLE VEHICLE», awake research vocations among our students and increase the quality of life of citizens.
SCHOOL GARDEN PROJECT The main objective is to facilitate the knowledge of the elements of the environment and their importance for life. Children work, experiment, learn and collaborate in it from 1st cycle of Pre-school Education (3 years) to 4th of Secondary (16 years).

The main objectives are:

  • Promote direct contact with the land, its needs and possibilities.
  • Learn to appreciate what nature gives us if we care for and respect it, creating emotional ties with the natural environment.
  • Value the importance of consuming fresh vegetables and fruit.
  • Learn to consume water responsibly and not waste it.
  • Study, from a scientific point of view, the development process of living beings: from birth to death (in this case, of plants).
  • Enjoy a natural environment even living in a city.
  • Promote cooperative attitudes, through teamwork, for the good maintenance of the school garden.

GREENHOUSE AND BIRDHOUSES CONSTRUCTION PROJECT It is a project for the construction of «Greenhouses» and «Birdhouses» for 1st ESO students of Biology and Technology subjects.

The general objective is sensitizing students about the importance of taking care of nature favouring the life of native species.

«PLANTING OF ACORN AND CHESTNUTS» PROJECT Activity designed for students from 3 to 6 of Primary Education. If the year is good in the production of acorns and/or chestnuts, the activity is extended to students of 1st and 2nd grade of Primary Education.

The objectives of the project are to raise students’ awareness of the importance of native forests as a source of oxygen production and CO2 sinks and mentalize them of their important role as conservators of the environment.

«CLEARER, WATER» PROJECT The «Clearer, WATER» Project is carried out with Early Childhood students. The main contents that are developed are What is water? Where is it? What states does it have and where does it come from? (Water cycle), its properties, the need for water for the life of people, animals and plants and of course how to care for it.
RESIDUAL WATER TREATMENT AND DRINKING WATER TREATMENT ACTIVITY Every year a former student offers talks to high school students on aspects related to water management, the phases of the water purification process, the phases of the water purification process and awareness for a rational and appropriate use of this resource.

Afterwards, the Valladolid Purification and Treatment Plant are visited.

LONG-LASTING ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS They are environmental stays of several days duration that are granted by different institutions, both public and private, in youth hostels under the supervision of various monitors. Every year the School prepares participation projects in most of these types of projects.

Among others, the “Recovery Program for Abandoned Villages” from the Ministry of Ecological Transition is requested for 1º BTO, “Environmental Education Centres” from the Ministry of Education in Viernoles (Cantabria) or Villardeciervos (Zamora) for 4º ESO, “Scientific, Artistic and Literary Classrooms” from the Ministry of Education for 3rd or 4th ESO and the “Environmental Awareness Plan” from the Valladolid Provincial Council in Matallana is requested for 1st ESO students.

MOUNTAIN GROUP The “Mountain Group” is carried out at any educational level because it is a different way of seeing and understanding nature.

There are four annual outings, all of them on Saturdays, travelling by bus to a natural mountain area.

PROJECT «KNOWING OUR ENVIRONMENT» It is proposed as a complementary activity of the Biology subject for Secondary School with the objectives of knowing the natural environment of our region, learning to take care of our environment as a way to achieve a healthy life and offer students a curricular complement. Some outputs, in recent years, have been:

  • MAVE, Palencia.
  • HOCES DEL DURATÓN, Segovia
  • VALSAIN, Segovia
  • VALPORQUERO, León.

ENVIRONMENTAL DAYS Coinciding with the audit of the Environmental Management System and the World Environment Day, on June 5, our School celebrates the Environmental Days.

The main objective of these sessions is to awareness our students of the importance of taking care of our environment and the responsible use of the raw resources.

Assessment

The evaluation of the activities of the Environmental Education Program is carried out through the participating teachers and students, at the end of them. Participants are asked about the degree of satisfaction with the content, methodology and services of the activities.

When the School carries out a long-term project or some more complex activity, evaluations are carried out before, during or after each activity included in it. The Environmental Work Group, once the quarters are finished, processes this information to detect trends, strengths and areas for improvement
